Ventral Hernia Evolution

ventralherniaLarge Ventral Hernias have seen an evolution in surgical care over the last 2 decades. The advent of minimally invasive surgery and robotic surgery has become commonplace for many surgical maneuvers, however, not necessarily so with large Ventral Hernia Repair. While the trend swung heavily toward Laparoscopic Ventral Hernia Repair a decade ago, the recent data is more consistently recommending the Component Separation Technique with Mesh ventralhernia2interposition for the larger Ventral Hernias. This is due to the fact that while the Minimally Invasive repair is good for many types of hernias (Laparoscopic Inguinal Hernia Repair for example), it lacks the ability in certain large ventral hernias to recreate the anatomy. Conversely, Component Separation Technique will be able to re-establish the structure of the abdominal wall, and additionally will re-enforce it with mesh interposed between the structures. This ventralhernia3technique, in many cases, is the only way to created a lasting repair with adequate functionality.
