What Are Common Causes of Hernia Injuries?

hernia New York, NY

A hernia happens if one of your organs pushes through a tissue or muscle opening. For example, an intestine may come through a weak area in your abdominal wall. Most of the time, you will notice hernias between your hips and chest. However, you may also see a hernia in the groin or upper thigh. Keep reading to learn more about this type of injury and what can cause it.

Causes of hernias

A combination of strain and muscular weakness most often cause hernias. Depending on what caused it, the hernia may appear over a long amount of time or quickly. However, if there is an injury, it is more likely to occur rapidly. There are several causes of muscular weakness that allow an organ to come through.

For example, it can be something that a person is born with. There might be a congenital condition that the patient had when they were born. Aging can trigger a weak spot in the muscles. Sports injuries are common causes of hernias. For example, lifting heavy weights or doing strenuous exercise can both be issues.

In some cases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) or excessive coughing can trigger it. There are a few things that can make a patient more likely to have a hernia. This can include:

  • Having a family history
  • Pregnancy, including multiple ones
  • Being older
  • Chronic cough, which can be because of pressure in the abdomen
  • Smoking, which can weaken the connective tissue
  • Being obese
  • Having chronic constipation

Sports hernias

A common cause of sports hernias is explosive or repetitive motion. That includes ones that require repeated twisting of the core. For example, rugby, skiing, hockey, soccer, hurdling and running are all potential causes. The pubic areas and the lower abdomen have sensitive soft tissue.

These can easily become injured or completely torn. The tendons that connect the pubic bone and the oblique muscles are very vulnerable. With many hernias, the tendons become torn as well. That can cause extreme pain for the athlete.

To diagnose this type of condition, the health care provider will find out what may have happened. The cause of the injury will often determine the treatment. It can also help the health care provider decide how serious it is. For example, more severe cases may require that the patient have surgery.

In other cases, physical therapy and rest may be enough to prevent it from worsening. That can give the tissues a chance to heal again. No matter what caused the hernia, the right treatment is vital. Without it, the patient may tear the tissue again and permanently damage the area.

Get hernia treatment today

On its own, a hernia will not go away. It is important to get treatment quickly. This is not considered a life-threatening condition. However, you might need surgery to prevent any dangerous complications from happening. If you suspect that you have this type of injury, it would be a good idea to see a doctor soon.
